Purpose

Hall Allocation is where you turn an exam you've already set up in Exams into an actual seating plan โ€” which room each class or group of students sits in, and in what arrangement. This matters most for exams where students from different classes or sections are mixed into shared halls, or where you need to spread students out to reduce copying.

Hall Allocation works alongside Invigilator Assignment โ€” once halls and seating are set, you assign staff to supervise each hall for each session.

When to Use

  • Before any exam that requires assigned seating rather than students sitting in their usual classroom.
  • When a school has more classes than available rooms and needs to schedule multiple sessions or share halls.
  • When you need to keep specific students apart (for example, students from the same class in a mixed hall).
  • When printing seating charts or hall tickets that reference a student's assigned room and seat number.

How to Use

  1. Open Hall Allocation from the Admin dashboard and select the exam.

  2. Add the halls or rooms available for the exam, along with each room's seating capacity.

  3. Assign classes (or student groups) to halls. Larnup distributes students across the room based on the capacity you've entered.

  4. If you want to prevent students from the same class sitting next to each other, apply a mixed-seating arrangement instead of a straight class-by-class block.

  5. Review the generated seating list per hall before publishing โ€” you can adjust individual seat assignments if needed.

  6. Publish the seating plan so it becomes visible to invigilators and, if enabled, on student hall tickets.

  7. Move on to Invigilator Assignment to staff each hall for its exam sessions.

TipSet up halls once per exam venue and reuse the same room list across exams in the same term โ€” it saves you from re-entering capacities every time.
Common MistakeChanging hall capacity or removing a room after seating has already been published will shuffle affected students โ€” publish only once you're confident the room list is final.
