Live Tracking, ETA & Route Progress

Purpose

Once a Driver starts a trip, Parents get a live view of their child's bus rather than having to guess or call the school. This page explains what that live view actually shows, how the ETA is worked out, and how the "bus is nearby" notification is triggered — all from the Parent's side of Transport.

When to Use

  • You're a Parent checking where the bus is on the way to or from school.
  • You want to understand why the ETA changes as the trip progresses.
  • You didn't get a notification when you expected one and want to understand how it's triggered.
  • You're an Admin or Driver fielding a parent's question about tracking accuracy.

How to Use

  1. Open the Larnup app and go to Transport (or your child's bus card on the home screen, if your school shows it there).

  2. If a trip is currently running on your child's route, you'll see the bus's live position on a map, updating continuously as the Driver's location changes.

  3. Below the map, check the ETA to your stop — this is calculated from the bus's current position, its speed, and the remaining stops ahead of yours on the route.

  4. As the bus gets close to your child's stop, you'll receive a notification. This is triggered by a geofence — a virtual boundary around the stop — rather than a fixed time, so it stays accurate even if the trip is running early or late.

  5. Once your child is marked boarded or dropped by the Driver, that status updates on your screen too, so you know not just where the bus is but whether your child is on it.

  6. If no trip is currently active, the map will show your route's stops but no live bus — this is expected outside of trip hours.

TipETA is an estimate based on current conditions, not a fixed schedule — traffic, a paused trip, or a delayed start can all shift it, and it will adjust automatically as the trip continues.
TipTurn on notifications for the Larnup app if you haven't already — the stop-arrival alert is one of the most time-sensitive notifications parents rely on.
Common MistakeA live map with no moving bus icon usually means the trip hasn't been started yet by the Driver, not that tracking is broken — check the trip status before assuming there's an issue.
Common MistakeGeofence-triggered notifications depend on the stop's location being set accurately during route setup — if you consistently get the "bus nearby" alert too early or too late, ask your School Admin to review that stop's location.
